The dot level of spells now line up with the practices consistently rather than utilizing artificial speedbumps like 1e did. Mage 2e has much more solid and consistent rules, especially for spellcasting. The inclusion of the God-Machine in the core Chronicles of Darkness rulebook has been received negatively by a few people, but like most things in the Chronicles of Darkness it can be easily removed and it's just there to provide a "default" chronicle for human characters to explore. The books are written, just like in 1E, with the idea that there's no ongoing story that changes from book to book. The mechanics do a better job of invoking the themes, tropes, and flavor of the setting.Īlso, anybody who says that "there's more metaplot" doesn't understand what metaplot is. I've also been very impressed with the writing of the new books, especially in comparison to the first 3 1E core books (vampire, werewolf, mage). There's no more "You need more dots to control more complex/rarer stuff" in the Arcana rules for Mage, and the clothes that werewolves wear automatically shift with them so nobody has to pick up the Rite of Dedication. Also, the games have done away with "Road Block" mechanics, or powers that weren't interesting but were "necessary". Vampires, Werewolves, and somehow even Mages got a slight boost in lethality and survivability. There is consensus that 2E splats are more powerful than their 1E predecessors. Also, the historical era book Dark Eras uses 2E rules whenever it can but provides a handy "translation guide" and is well worth the price by itself. So far, there are 7.5 second edition games: Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Promethean, Demon, Beast, "Mortals", and Hunter got a book called Mortal Remains that patches it. Vampire can still benefit from the Clan Books, Damnation City is still an amazing book for building a city in any game regardless of edition, and that sort of thing. For the most part, books that were good in 1E are still useful in 2E. System-wise things are streamlined, and anything you want in 1E probably exists in 2E or should be easy to port. I see more fans of 2E than 1E, but I tend to stick to the official forums where that would be more common.įor my money, I think 2E is better across the board.
